The Pathfinder primary setting, Golarion, was originally a 3.5 setting that was revamped into the new system with this book. When WOTC introduced fourth edition, Paizo decided to use the OGL to keep third edition alive by creating Pathfinder, a further revamp of the third edition rules, adding some new classes, revamping rules, and just further streamlining it.
